Digital marketing is more than just posting content—it’s about strategy, community, and staying ahead of the curve. Vannesia Darby shares her journey from independent creator to leading digital at Shondaland.
Vannesia Darby is the Digital Marketing Director at Shondaland, a production company founded by television writer and producer Shonda Rhimes. Darby knows what it takes to stay ahead in a shifting digital world. From crafting ringtones in high school to leading social media strategies for a major entertainment brand, her career showcases adaptability, ingenuity, and the power of community.
Darby’s path has been anything but linear. She landed her first music industry job through sheer determination, reaching out via social media. That led her to a crash course in marketing, artist development, and event production. “I was big on campus, but once you graduate, you still have to take those transferable skills and put them somewhere else,” she reflects.
Her career evolved alongside the transition from physical media to streaming. “To move from that to streaming and to not even paying for music anymore, you have to find other ways to create commerce. You have to have some ingenuity,” she explains. This ability to anticipate trends has been central to her success.
After years in corporate roles, Darby founded her agency, Moxie Nashville. “I never thought, ‘Oh, there’s something that I’m deficient in. I can’t learn it,’” she says. “It was like, ‘Girl, you got to eat, and you like to eat good.’”
Running a business provided valuable experience, but eventually, she returned to in-house work, joining Shondaland. “When you’re an entrepreneur and the top of your company, the company’s only as good as you,” she says. The shift has allowed her to refine her creative and strategic approach.
Darby stresses the importance of authenticity in digital spaces. “People have a responsibility and should have a moral and ethical standing on what you put on social media,” she states. With misinformation rampant, she emphasizes that brands and influencers must remain transparent.
At Shondaland, she balances storytelling with audience engagement, ensuring content aligns with the brand’s vision while fostering community. “You give people just enough so that they can amplify your brand, but not enough to where you feel like you owe them something or you’re obligated to something,” she notes.
As social media continues to evolve, Darby focuses on refining strategy and embracing new opportunities. “Oftentimes, creators and even brands, we create in silos and we don’t consider our audience when we’re making content,” she says. For her, success in digital marketing means understanding audience behavior and adapting accordingly.
From music to marketing, entrepreneurship to corporate leadership, Darby’s career proves that creativity and strategy go hand in hand. Tune in to this episode of Artisanal Insights to hear more about her journey and vision for social media’s future.
